  Qualifying for the City of Washington, Georgia
  Municipal Special Election
  
  
  
  The City of Washington, Georgia, hereby announces that qualifying for the Municipal Special Election, which will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, will begin on August 4th and end on August 7^th, 2025, from 8:30 am through 4:30 pm in the office of the City Clerk.
  
  One (1) Council member will be elected from District 1 to fill the unexpired term of the late Councilman Maceo Mahoney, whose term will expire in December 2027.  Qualification fees for council members will be $108.00.

• PUBLIC NOTIFICATION REGARDING DRINKING WATER

  IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
  HAA5 VIOLATION AT THE CITY OF WASHINGTON GA. WATER SYSTEM
  Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this incident was not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we are doing to correct this situation. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants.  We have been notified by Georgia EPD that our water system exceeded the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for the following:

  What should I do? • There is nothing you need to do. You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. Residents should not be alarmed and do not need to seek alternative water supplies. We are taking corrective action to ensure that adequate monitoring and reporting will be maintained.
  
  What does this mean? Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) are disinfection by-products. Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are organic and inorganic compounds resulting from chemical reactions between organic and inorganic substances such as contaminates and chemical treatment disinfection agents, respectively, in water during water disinfection processes. Some people who drink water containing Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) in excess of the maximum contaminate levels (MCl) over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer. If you have a severely compromised immune system, have an infant, are pregnant or are elderly, you may be at increased risk and should seek advice from your health care provider about drinking this water.
  
  What is being done?  This is our first violation of this contaminate. We are continuing to test and monitor disinfection by-products as required. We are working on ways to reduce DBPs by changing operating strategies at the treatment facilities and throughout the water system.
