JOB TITLE:  Service Worker                                                                       

 

DEPARTMENT:  Water and Sewer, City of Washington

 

JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for assisting with the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines and mains.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

o  Installs, maintains, and repairs water and sewer lines and mains.

 

o  Makes water and sewer taps for new services.     

 

o  Locates and repairs leaks in water and sewer lines.

 

o  Replaces defective water meters; installs back flow devices.

 

o  Flushes water lines; unclogs sewer lines.

 

o  Builds and installs manholes; installs prefabricated manholes.

 

o May operate a backhoe to install utility lines.

 

o  Builds forms and pours and finishes concrete.

 

o  Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

o   Knowledge of safety procedures pertaining to the installation, repair and maintenance   of water and sewer lines.

 

o   Knowledge of the methods and practices of installing, maintaining, and repairing        water and sewer lines and mains.

 

o   Skill in operating such equipment as backhoes, ditch witches, tapping machines, dump trucks, and trencher.

 

o   Skill in the use of such tools as chain saws, jackhammers, pipe locators, pipe cutters,   and various hand tools.

 

o  Skill in the maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines.

 

o  Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations.


 

o   Skill in driving a pickup truck.

 

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.  Work is spot-checked in progress and reviewed upon completion for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of final results.

 

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include state Department of Transportation guidelines, accepted work safety practices, and supervisory instructions.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related water and sewer line installation, maintenance and repair duties.  The need to locate and dig around other utility lines contributes to the complexity of the work.

 

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to install, maintain, and repair water and sewer lines and mains.  Successful performance facilitates the speed and accuracy of repairs and service and affects customer satisfaction with water and sewer services.  

 

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, employees of other utility companies, and other city employees.

 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.  The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is performed outdoors.  The work exposes the employee to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, inclement weather, raw sewage, and possibly infectious diseases.  The work requires the use of safety devices such as masks, goggles and gloves.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  None.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

o   Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.

 

o   Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.


 

o   Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
